Pastoral Lenten Message

Greetings in the name of our Savior, Jesus the Christ. As this year seems to be moving really fast, the sacred season of Lent begins next week.

Lent is an intentional time to dive deeply into our faith. It is a time where we connect more profoundly with the spirit of Christ at work in us and the world. We do this through special rituals… worship experiences, study, and prayer. During the 6 weeks of Lent, beginning Ash Wednesday, February 14th, we will ponder the question, “Who Am I”. A seemingly simple question at first. But as one cuts through their list of accomplishments, possessions, and what you see in the mirror, you begin to experience a greater sense of self, the person God created…the person God knows. And in doing so, you connect with God at a deeper level. Lent and Holy Week offer a special time to draw closer to the living Christ in our life and times.

But, before we dive into the deep reflection of the Lent season, join in the fun and festivities at our Family Carnevale Party (all ages welcome!). It will be held on Tuesday, February 13th, 4-6pm in the Wesley room. As is tradition in many corners of the world, let’s indulge in tasty treats and celebrate with costumes and games. Please RSVP to [email protected] so we can plan accordingly.

We have a number of opportunities for you to experience the sacredness of Lent;

Wednesday, February 14th, Ash Wednesday–the Imposition of ashes. Ashes can be received in a variety of settings:

9 am Ash Wednesday service at the Oak Park Arms.

Noon through 4 pm in the Drop Off Zone at the Euclid Door. Call the office to let us know you are there and ready to receive.

7:30 pm all Church worship service in person

Sundays, Centering Prayer, 9:30 am (from February 18th until March 24th) in the Parlor. 20 minutes of silent contemplation. A beautiful way to open oneself to the movement of the spirit and prepare for worship.

Wednesdays, Bible Study, 6 pm (from February 21st until March 27th) at the Oak Park Arms. We will be using the book Entering the Passion of Jesus, a Beginners Guide to Holy Week by Dr. AJ Levine (video), University Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt Divinity School. Everyone is invited to participate.

Holy Week:

Palm Sunday, March 24, 10:30 am in the Sanctuary

Holy Tuesday, March 26, 7:30 pm, Healing and Reconciliation Service

Holy Thursday, March 28th, 7:30 pm. Our community gathers for a potluck service, sharing not only food, but also reflections on the significance of the Last Supper, fostering a sense of communion and fellowship among us. As we break bread together, we honor the traditions of our faith and deepen our connection with one another in the spirit of love and service. This is a family friendly dinner where everyone is welcome at Christ’s table.

Good Friday, March 29th, 10 am at the Oak Park Arms. “Stations of the Cross”

Good Friday, March 29th, 7:30 pm in the Sanctuary “The Seven Last Words of Christ”

Easter Sunrise, 6 am, in the West Garden around the Columbarium, weather permitting. A brief order to Proclaim the Light and Life

Easter Service, 10:30 am. Our traditional service in person and online in the Sanctuary.

We hope you have an opportunity to explore the varied studies, practices and worship that will make this Lent a meaningful one for you.

In Christ’s Service,

Pastor Tony
